Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Killing Farm Worker
BRIGHAM CITY, Utah (TCN) — A 60-year-old man has been sentenced to spend up to 30 years in prison for the murder of a 19-year-old farm worker he lived and worked with.
Details of the Murder and Sentencing
KSL-TV reported that James Brenner was sentenced to one to 15 years in prison for two counts of murder, which will be served consecutively, for killing Dylan Rounds in 2022. The sentencing also includes charges of two counts of possession of a firearm by a restricted person.
Disappearance and Investigation
Rounds disappeared on May 26, 2022, after dining at a restaurant in Montello, Nevada, before returning to Utah. He made a phone call on May 28, 2022, but was not heard from again. He was reported missing to the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office. Months later, the FBI released a statement naming Brenner as a suspect in his disappearance. Brenner was arrested on unrelated federal gun charges.
Arrest and Confession
Brenner was arrested on March 3, 2023, in Box Elder County on charges of aggravated murder and abuse or desecration of a corpse, even though Rounds’ remains had not been found. Brenner later disclosed to law enforcement in April where he had buried Rounds’ body, as reported by KSL.
Plea Deal and Discovery of Remains
In May 2024, Brenner entered a plea deal with prosecutors, leading to the revelation of Rounds’ burial location. His remains were located and positively identified in April 2024. The Box Elder County Attorney’s Office reduced Brenner’s charge from aggravated murder to second-degree murder and dismissed the desecration of human remains count. Brenner also pleaded guilty to the gun charges.
Family Advocate Speaks at Sentencing
During Brenner’s sentencing, a representative from the Missing in America Network described Rounds as a “dreamer, a builder, a visionary.”
Loved and Remembered
The advocate added, “His spirit was as vibrant and enduring as the sunflowers he loved.”
Judge’s Words to Brenner
The judge warned Brenner that when he becomes eligible for parole, he will recommend to the parole board to keep him incarcerated for as long as possible.
