100 Years Ago, 1924:

Irving Goldberg and Lewis Sohat, residents of 919 Simpson St., Eddystone, found themselves in hot water when they were apprehended in a raid conducted by County Detective John O’Toole, Sergeant Kaufman, State Troopers Walsh and Powell, and Detective James Meli. The authorities discovered a 125-gallon still, 70 barrels of mash, and 20 gallons of whiskey on the third floor of their property. Prior to this raid, David Scrigler was also arrested on Chester Pike, with authorities uncovering between 30 and 40 gallons of rum in his possession.

75 Years Ago, 1949:

The long July 4 holiday weekend in Delaware County was marred by a series of traffic accidents and mishaps, resulting in numerous individuals requiring treatment at local hospitals for their injuries. The Bridgeport terminal of the Chester-Bridgeport Ferry Co. experienced delays as homeward-bound motorists were lined up for several blocks, causing crossings to be delayed by up to 15 minutes. Louis J. Kapelski, the executive manager, decided to give the crew a day off after one of the ferry boats was taken out of operation during the night.

50 Years Ago, 1974:

The scorching heat on the nation’s 198th birthday was not just from the fireworks. Temperatures reached a sweltering 94 degrees, coming within six degrees of the July 4 record set in 1919. The sunny morning weather had a 50 percent chance of turning into thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, with the potential for hail and high winds, as predicted by the National Weather Service in Philadelphia.

25 Years Ago, 1999:

Kenn Stark, a reporter for Town Talk newspaper, received recognition in Journal Register Company’s Editorial Excellence Awards for his work. Stark, a resident of Aston, secured third place in the Community Human Interest Division for his personal commentary titled “Big Brother Is Watching You … And Your Little Dog, Too.” The article delved into a controversial policy regarding pet licensing in the county.

10 Years Ago, 2014:

State Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi introduced legislation aimed at freezing school property taxes for senior citizens, which will be a key topic for debate when lawmakers return from summer recess. Pileggi, representing Chester in the Senate, proposed freezing property taxes for homeowners aged 65 and above through Senate Bill 299, also known as the Taxpayer Relief Act.
