Authorities in Galesburg, Illinois, have reported that a woman has been taken into custody following an incident on the Fourth of July where a bicyclist was struck and the driver fled the scene.

At approximately 11 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, Galesburg police officers were leaving the Lake Storey area after the town’s fireworks display when they discovered a man lying unresponsive in the road at the 3500 block of N. Henderson Street. The individual has since been identified as 46-year-old Eric McKinney.

Emergency medical services were immediately contacted and began administering life-saving measures to McKinney. He was then transported to a nearby hospital, where sadly he was pronounced deceased at 12:16 a.m.

Upon further investigation, authorities determined that McKinney had been riding his bicycle when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver, identified as 65-year-old Martha E. Ray, allegedly fled the scene heading southbound. Ray was subsequently apprehended and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash. She is currently being held at Knox County Jail pending a court hearing.

Law enforcement officials have indicated that additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation into the incident continues.
