New York Police Chief of Department Jeff Maddrey mentioned that responding officers detected the smell of alcohol at the scene, but further testing is still ongoing to confirm this suspicion. Hyden has been charged with eight counts of assault, including reckless causing serious injury with a weapon, aggravated vehicular homicide killing more than one person, driving while intoxicated, and aggravated unlicensed operator of a vehicle by the New York City police.

Hyden, who worked as a substance abuse counselor and was most recently employed at residential treatment programs in Manhattan, authored a book titled “The Sober Addict: A Guide on How to Be Functional With the Dysfunctional Disease of Addiction” in 2020. Among the injured, one individual remains in critical condition, while seven others sustained minor injuries, including an 11-year-old boy. Upon arrival at the scene, emergency responders found the pickup truck on top of four victims, prompting locals to assist in ensuring the driver stayed put until authorities arrived.

Hyden was arrested at the scene and treated for head and facial lacerations. It was noted that he was not wearing a seatbelt and possessed a suspended license. Despite suspicions of impairment, he declined all testing. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and it remains unclear whether Hyden has legal representation at this time..
