Accident – Death – Obituary News :

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. (WJXT) – Newly-released body camera footage captures the harrowing moment a chemical pipe bomb detonated on a deputy during a routine traffic stop in Putnam County, Florida. The incident, which occurred earlier this spring, highlights the dangers law enforcement officers face on a daily basis.

In the video, the Putnam County Sheriff’s deputy can be seen pulling over 60-year-old Charles Legault after detecting the smell of marijuana in his vehicle. Upon searching the truck, the deputy discovered what appeared to be drugs and paraphernalia, as well as a handgun in the seat.

As the deputy continued the search, he found bags containing a white substance, which Legault claimed were for his “six heart attacks.” Moments later, the explosive device detonated, engulfing the deputy in a cloud of white chemical powder.

Despite initial struggles to breathe, the deputy managed to call for backup and detain Legault. He was later taken to a local hospital for treatment of respiratory injuries caused by the chemical explosion.

Expert Commentary on the Incident

Retired Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office director of homeland security and investigations, Tom Hackney, expressed relief that the deputy’s injuries were not more severe. He emphasised the potential dangers of such incidents, noting that permanent damage could have occurred if the explosive had been larger or gotten into the deputy’s eyes.

Hackney also highlighted the role of environmental factors, such as wind conditions, in mitigating the impact of the explosion. He suggested that the deputy was fortunate that the winds helped disperse the fumes, thus reducing the severity of his injuries.

Subsequent Investigations and Charges

Following the explosion, a bomb squad was called in to ensure the safety of the area before further investigations could take place. Deputies later raided Legault’s home, uncovering additional illegal substances but no other explosive devices.

As a result of the incident, Legault was arrested and charged with multiple felonies, including trafficking meth, possessing an explosive device, and battery on a law enforcement officer. He is currently being held without bond as the investigation continues.

The shocking body camera footage serves as a stark reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face in the line of duty, and the importance of remaining vigilant in the face of potential threats.
