On Wednesday, the city of Lexington, Kentucky, joined in the nationwide celebration of National CROWN Day. The acronym CROWN stands for “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural hair,” highlighting the importance of embracing and celebrating natural hair.

National CROWN Day holds significance as it marks the day when the CROWN Act was signed into law. The CROWN Act, short for the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural hair Act, is a legislative movement that aims to end race-based hair discrimination. This includes discrimination based on hair texture and protective styles commonly worn by people of colour.

In Lexington, the celebration of National CROWN Day served as a platform to raise awareness about the CROWN Act and promote a greater understanding and acceptance of natural hair. The city’s leaders gathered to discuss the impact of the CROWN Act and what it means for the community.

District 2 Councilmember Shayla Lynch expressed her support for the CROWN Act, stating, “I want all of Lexington to have their hair freedom and not feel that they have to lessen themselves in order to go to work each day. In Lexington, you are protected.”
