Accident – Death – Obituary News : A 28-year-old fitness instructor from Chandigarh has been apprehended by authorities after being linked to 11 cases of sexual assault in the region. The suspect, identified as Sawan Bhatti, was tracked down through an extensive investigation that involved verifying close to 1,000 white Activa scooters across the Tricity area, one of which was used in the commission of the heinous crimes against women.
Following his arrest, Bhatti was remanded to judicial custody. However, on Wednesday, he was brought before the court on a production warrant in connection with a separate FIR. Described as a graduate with a BSc degree in computer science, Bhatti is employed at a gym in Mohali and resides in Chandigarh with his live-in partner.
Sarita Roy, the Station House Officer at Sector 17 police station in Chandigarh, disclosed that the accused was implicated in a string of sexual assault incidents. One such incident occurred in May, when a young woman in Sector 16 reported being attacked while sitting alone in a park. The victim recounted how a man suddenly grabbed her from behind, covered her mouth to stifle her cries, and dragged her to the roadside. Threatened with violence, the victim was then subjected to a horrific sexual assault.
The victim’s quick thinking friend, who overheard the distressing events over the phone, raised the alarm and alerted the authorities. Subsequently, an FIR was lodged at the Sector 17 police station, where investigators uncovered a similar case reported at the Sector 11 police station in June.
Acting on evidence from CCTV footage, the police identified the assailant as the rider of a white Activa scooter with distinct characteristics such as missing rear-view mirrors and a specific type of helmet. Over a six-week period, law enforcement meticulously verified nearly 1,000 similar scooters in the Tricity area before finally zeroing in on the suspect.
On July 1, a coordinated operation led to the apprehension of Bhatti at the Sector 16/23 dividing road, following a positive identification by the victim from Sector 16. Both victims underwent medical examinations, and during interrogation, the accused confessed to his involvement in multiple sexual assault incidents in the city. Bhatti revealed that he would commit the crimes after 10 pm near parks frequented by solitary women, concealing his identity with a black handkerchief.
The arrest of Bhatti represents a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the spate of sexual assaults in Chandigarh. Authorities are continuing their efforts to ensure justice for the victims and hold the perpetrator accountable for his reprehensible actions..
