Rebecca Joynes, the teacher in question, reportedly began grooming the two boys when they were just 15 years old after initially connecting with them on social media, according to the Court’s findings.
The 30-year-old educator was found guilty of four counts of sexual activity with one child and two counts of sexual activity with another during her trial. She was visibly emotional as the court announced her lengthy imprisonment.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that Joynes had just ended a nine-year relationship when she was 28 and felt “flattered” by the attention she received from the teenage boys.
Teen boys, identified as Victims A and B, shared their harrowing experiences in court. Victim B, who fathered Joynes’ child, admitted to initially being in denial about the abuse he suffered. He expressed feelings of betrayal and stated, “I was coerced, controlled, manipulated, sexually abused, and mentally abused.”

The impact of the abuse on Victim B’s family was also highlighted, with the teenager disclosing that the incident had torn them apart and left them struggling to come to terms with the trauma.
Judge Kate Cornell did not mince words when addressing Joynes, condemning her actions as a blatant abuse of trust and authority. The judge remarked, “There is a breathtaking arrogance in your conduct. You were the adult. You were the person in control, the person who should have known better and entrusted by the school and the boys and by their parents of caring for their sons.”
In her defence, Joynes attempted to downplay the severity of her actions by suggesting that the boys may not have been true victims due to their willingness to engage in sexual activity with an older woman. However, Judge Cornell firmly rebutted this argument, emphasizing that both boys were vulnerable to Joynes’ advances and unequivocally victims of her exploitation.
