Authorities in General Santos City were met with a deadly confrontation when they attempted to serve an arrest warrant on a 52-year-old man known as alias “Pogi”, who was considered the number one most wanted person in the city. The suspect engaged in a shootout with the police, resulting in his death.
The incident occurred when the police team approached the suspect to serve the arrest warrant. The suspect allegedly initiated the gunfire, prompting the officers to defend themselves. The exchange of bullets ended with the suspect being fatally wounded before he could receive medical attention.
Major Ivan Charles Abastillas, Commander of General Santos City Police Station 6, stated, “He fired shots at our operatives upon seeing them attempting to serve the warrant, which led to our officers returning fire in self-defense, resulting in the suspect being hit.”
The deceased suspect was wanted for charges related to the violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act and illegal possession of firearms. Upon searching the suspect’s belongings, authorities found three sachets of suspected shabu, a caliber .45 pistol, and a magnum .22 revolver.
Previous attempts to apprehend the suspect had been unsuccessful, with the warrant of arrest finally being issued in April 2024. The firearms recovered from the suspect, as well as those used by the police team, will undergo ballistic examination to determine their involvement in any previous crimes in General Santos City.
Major Abastillas emphasised that the police action was taken in self-defense, stating, “We only fire our weapons in self-defense when there is an immediate threat to our lives.”
