BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB/Gray News) – Louisiana State University has introduced a new initiative to encourage incoming freshmen to live at home by offering a $3,000 incentive. This incentive is aimed at students whose home addresses are within a 30-minute radius of LSU’s campus. The university’s Residential Life Executive Director, Peter Trentacoste, explained that the incentive is part of LSU’s strategy to manage occupancy levels on campus.

The decision to introduce the $3,000 commuter incentive comes as LSU has seen a higher demand for on-campus accommodation than initially anticipated. However, some students like LSU Sophomore Kayla Vine believe that the university should focus on expanding housing options rather than encouraging students to commute.

Vine expressed her concerns, stating, “I feel that LSU receives substantial funding for dormitory construction, but there seems to be a lack of transparency in how these funds are utilised. For instance, $80 million was allocated to the construction of a lavish recreation centre with amenities like a lazy river, rather than investing in more dormitories for incoming freshmen.”

The $3,000 live-at-home incentive has created opportunities for out-of-state students like Cole Costello, who recently secured a spot in the university’s dormitory. Costello shared his relief at receiving a dorm assignment, but acknowledged the challenges that many students face due to limited on-campus accommodation.

LSU emphasised that even students who choose to commute have numerous opportunities to engage in campus life and activities. Trentacoste assured students that the university is committed to ensuring that all students, whether living on or off campus, feel welcomed and included in the campus community.

LSU Res Life has indicated that the $3,000 live-at-home incentive will only be available for a limited period, and the offer will be closed once a specific number of applicants have been accepted into the program.
