PEORIA, Ariz. – One individual sustained injuries and five canines are currently unaccounted for following a rapid-spreading fire that authorities believe originated from a barbecue grill on the Fourth of July.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. when a barbecue fire outside a residence near 88th Avenue and Williams Road in Peoria quickly engulfed the home. The property is situated on a county island encompassed by Peoria.

Upon arrival, Peoria Fire-Medical teams were met with a blaze that was rapidly advancing throughout the structure. The area lacked sufficient fire hydrants, necessitating the use of extended hoses to access water sources.

Due to the delay in water supply, additional firefighting units were summoned to the scene. Eventually, the fire was brought under control later in the morning.

Peoria Fire-Medical officials have attributed the fire to a “malfunction” with the barbecue grill. The homeowner sustained a burn injury while attempting to extinguish the flames as they approached the dwelling, prompting his transfer to a hospital for medical care.

Fortunately, no other individuals were harmed in the incident; however, authorities are currently searching for five dogs that went missing during the chaos.

Assistance was provided by multiple firefighting agencies, including Rural Metro, Arizona Fire & Medical Authority, Glendale, Phoenix, and Sun City.
