Authorities in Winnipeg have announced that a 27-year-old man has been arrested and charged in relation to a tragic homicide and a series of arson incidents that occurred on June 26.
The Tragic Events
The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) received a distressing call reporting a fire at a townhouse on Keewatin Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 30-year-old woman, later identified as Nirmaljeet Kaur, and a 29-year-old man with serious injuries. It was determined that the fire had started when a couch was intentionally set ablaze near the building while the victims were asleep.
Both Kaur and the man were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. While the man’s condition eventually stabilized, Kaur tragically succumbed to her injuries a few days later.
The Investigation
During the course of their investigation, the police uncovered that the individual responsible for the townhouse fire had also ignited three separate garbage bins in the vicinity. Additionally, it was revealed that prior to the arson attack, a man in his 30s had been accosted at a nearby gas station by the suspect, who subsequently demanded cigarettes before assaulting the victim.

Later that evening, the suspect was apprehended by law enforcement officers on an unrelated matter on William Avenue. The individual, identified as Izak Sararas, was subsequently charged with two counts of arson endangering human life, four counts of property damage, and robbery.
Additional Charges
In light of Kaur’s tragic passing, Winnipeg police added a charge of manslaughter to Sararas’ list of offenses on July 2.
The authorities continue to investigate the case, and anyone with information is urged to come forward to assist in the ongoing inquiry.
