An unidentified assailant has tragically taken the life of a 53-year-old man, Nguot Gai Liah, in Block One, Sector Three of the Bentiu displaced people’s camp in Unity State. The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, according to a statement from the local police.
The Bentiu displaced people’s camp, a vast settlement, was transferred to the state government’s control in 2020.
Details of the Incident
John Malieth, the police spokesperson for Unity State, revealed that the victim was attacked at 3 a.m. on Wednesday while he was outside his shelter. The assailant struck as Liah was returning to his shelter after stepping out to relieve himself.
“The incident took place when the deceased emerged from his shelter to urinate. As he was heading back indoors, he was fatally stabbed,” Malieth explained. “The joint police forces are actively pursuing the perpetrator of this heinous act. Once apprehended, the individual will face the full extent of the law for perpetrating a crime against the community.”
Law Enforcement Efforts
Malieth also mentioned that this is the second violent incident to occur in the camp following the handover from the United Nations to the state authorities. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder, but law enforcement is diligently working to track down the perpetrator.
“Despite the lack of apprehensions thus far, our team is fully committed to locating the murderer and bringing them to justice,” Malieth affirmed.
