A man has been sentenced to 15 years to life for the murder of his girlfriend, whose dismembered remains were found in a trash bag along a trail in California. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office announced the sentencing of 43-year-old Joseph Roberts for the murder of 27-year-old Rachel Elizabeth Imani Buckner.
Roberts was given credit for 300 days of time served before being transferred to San Quentin State Prison. Additionally, he was ordered to pay $19,818 in restitution. This sentencing follows his conviction for second-degree murder in connection to the case.
The incident came to light on July 20, 2023, when officers from the Alameda Police Department responded to a call about a suspicious circumstance report. The discovery of a woman’s dismembered body inside a black garbage bag along a waterfront trail on Bay Farm Island in Alameda led to the investigation.
The remains were identified as belonging to Buckner on August 29, 2023. Roberts was arrested almost a week later on September 6, 2023. Police were able to link Roberts to the crime through DNA evidence found on a piece of duct tape used to seal the bag.
According to the district attorney’s office, Roberts and Buckner first met at Golden Gate University Law School in 2019 and lived together. They were engaged at the time of Buckner’s death.
The DA’s office revealed that there were multiple welfare checks and domestic violence calls made to the apartment where Roberts and Buckner lived. Despite living together, Roberts never reported Buckner missing.
District Attorney Pamela Y. Price expressed that while the sentencing may bring some closure, it cannot undo the tragedy of what Roberts did to Buckner and the lasting impact on her family.
A GoFundMe page created in memory of Buckner described her as a vibrant and accomplished woman with a promising future ahead. She is survived by her family, including her young daughter.
