Governor Mike DeWine has issued an order for U.S. and Ohio flags to be flown at half-staff on all public buildings and grounds in Cuyahoga County, as well as at the Ohio Statehouse, Vern Riffe Center, and Rhodes State Office Tower in Columbus. This tribute will continue until sunset on the day of the funeral of Cleveland Police Officer Jamieson Ritter.

In a statement, Governor DeWine expressed his condolences to Officer Ritter’s family, friends, and colleagues. He highlighted Officer Ritter’s dedication to protecting the citizens of Cleveland, as well as his service to the state and nation as a member of the Ohio National Guard. DeWine reflected on the sacrifices made by law enforcement and military personnel in upholding freedom and public safety, particularly poignant on Independence Day.

Officer Jamieson Ritter joined the Cleveland Division of Police in November 2020, demonstrating his commitment to serving and protecting the community.

Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd lamented the tragic loss, noting the irony of such a devastating event occurring on a day symbolising freedom. She praised Officer Ritter’s sacrifice and pledged to honour his memory and carry forward his legacy of compassion and dedication.

According to reports from the Plain Dealer, a 24-year-old man has been charged with aggravated murder in connection with Officer Ritter’s death.
