Chicago Deputy Chief Don Jerome described the South Side of Chicago as “a scene of another tragedy” on the Fourth of July. The incident occurred in the Grand Crossing neighborhood around 6:15 a.m. Thursday.
Two women lost their lives in the shooting, aged 22 and 42, while three young boys, aged 5, 7, and 8, sustained critical injuries. The identities and relationships of the victims have not been disclosed.
The wounded boys were rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital for treatment. According to Jerome, they are currently in critical condition.
Deputy Chief Jerome stated that the shooting is believed to have originated from a personal dispute. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and as of now, no suspects have been apprehended.
All the victims were reportedly inside the residence when the shooting occurred. At the scene, authorities discovered multiple shell casings from both a rifle and a handgun.
Desmon Yancy, the alderperson representing Grand Crossing, expressed shock over the incident. He mentioned that there were no prior indications of any issues that might have led to the shooting. Yancy highlighted that the community is usually peaceful and not accustomed to such violence.
Yancy voiced his concerns about the growing trend of personal conflicts escalating into gun violence. He emphasised the need to address these issues to prevent further tragedies in the neighbourhood.
