Don Jerome : “Tragic shooting leaves 2 women dead, 3 children injured”

The South Side of Chicago was engulfed in tragedy on Independence Day, as Deputy Chief Don Jerome described it as “a scene of another tragedy.” The incident occurred in the Grand Crossing neighborhood at approximately 6:15 a.m. on Thursday, leaving two women dead and three children wounded.

According to Jerome, the women who lost their lives were aged 22 and 42, while the three boys, aged 5, 7, and 8, are currently fighting for their lives. Their identities and relationships have not been disclosed to the public.

The injured boys were rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital and are listed in critical condition, as confirmed by Jerome during a press conference. The shooting is suspected to have originated from a personal dispute, adding a layer of complexity to the tragic event.

Despite ongoing investigations, no suspects have been apprehended by the authorities at this time. All victims were believed to have been inside the residence when the violent incident transpired, with multiple shell casings from both a rifle and a handgun discovered at the scene.

Desmon Yancy, the alderperson representing Grand Crossing, expressed shock over the incident and stated that there were no prior indications of any issues that could have led to such violence in the neighbourhood. The area, known for its tranquillity, is not accustomed to such acts of aggression.

In a sombre tone, Yancy emphasised the lethal combination of personal conflicts and firearms, calling for an end to the cycle of violence that plagues communities. As summer unfolds, he urged for a collective effort to prevent further tragedies and to address the underlying causes of such incidents.
