In Queens, NY, District Attorney Melinda Katz has announced the sentencing of Dennis Vassilenko, a known member of the Crips 8 Trey gang, to 20 years to life in prison for the 2021 murder of 17-year-old Eduardo Hernandez-Martinez. The sentencing came after a jury trial where Vassilenko was found guilty of second-degree murder for the shooting that occurred in front of a barbershop in Corona.

The tragic incident took place on July 7, 2021, when Hernandez-Martinez met with Vassilenko to sell marijuana. Video surveillance footage presented in court showed Vassilenko leading the victim from a smoke shop to the location where the shooting took place. At that point, Vassilenko fatally shot Hernandez-Martinez at point-blank range while the victim was holding a bag of marijuana. Following the shooting, Vassilenko fled the scene in a getaway car driven by his co-defendant, Stephanie Pena.

Pena, who was implicated as an accessory in the crime, pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution and was sentenced in June 2022 to one to three years in prison.

District Attorney Katz highlighted the sentence as a demonstration of the commitment to removing illegal firearms from the streets and prosecuting those involved in criminal activities. She expressed hope that the verdict would provide some comfort to the victim’s family. Vassilenko, who has also been accused of violent conduct while in Rikers Island, was sentenced by Justice Kenneth Holder.
