CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) – Tragedy struck Cleveland, Ohio on Thursday morning when a police officer was fatally shot in the city’s Hough neighborhood.
Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd confirmed that the 27-year-old male officer was shot at approximately 1 a.m. Chief Todd revealed that multiple officers had responded to the area to serve a warrant on a man wanted for felonious assault.
Upon their arrival, the suspect, later identified as Delawnte Hardy, was spotted leaving a residence on a bicycle. Chief Todd explained that as the officers attempted to stop him, the suspect opened fire, striking the officer.
Delawnte Hardy was apprehended at the scene and taken to the Cuyahoga County Justice Center, where he faces charges of aggravated murder.

At this time, the identity of the fallen officer has not been released. Chief Todd shared that the officer had served with the department for four years and was stationed in the Third District.
“They deserve recognition for the heroes they truly are,” Chief Todd stated.
Chief Todd also mentioned that although the suspect was unharmed, he was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
“I urge the residents of Cleveland to keep this officer’s family and our police department in their thoughts and prayers,” expressed Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb.
