A tragic incident unfolded in Cleveland, Ohio, as a police officer lost his life in the line of duty on Thursday morning. The 27-year-old male officer was fatally shot at around 1 a.m. in the city’s Hough neighborhood, according to Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd.

Details of the Incident

Chief Todd revealed that multiple officers had responded to the area to serve a warrant on a man wanted for felonious assault. The suspect, identified as Delawnte Hardy, was spotted leaving a residence on a bicycle. As officers attempted to apprehend him, Hardy opened fire, striking the officer.

Hardy was swiftly taken into custody at the scene and later transported to the Cuyahoga County Justice Center. He now faces charges of aggravated murder in connection with the officer’s death.

Condolences and Support

The fallen officer’s identity has not yet been released. Chief Todd highlighted that the officer had served with the department for four years and was assigned to the Third District. She urged the community to recognise the bravery and sacrifice of law enforcement officers.

Following the tragic incident, Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb called upon residents to offer prayers for the officer’s family and the entire police department. The suspect, Delawnte Hardy, did not sustain any injuries but was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures.
