Authorities in Cleveland County, Oklahoma, are reeling from a devastating accident that claimed the lives of two young children who became trapped underwater while riding on a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) last Sunday.
Details of the Accident
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the tragic incident occurred when a UTV carrying six individuals, including four children, attempted to cross the South Canadian River. However, the vehicle unexpectedly dropped 10 feet, causing it to become submerged in the water.
While four of the occupants managed to escape the sinking UTV, two young children, aged 8 months and 2 years, were unable to free themselves. Despite the adults’ efforts to lead the children to shore, they were unable to locate the submerged vehicle, which still contained the trapped children securely fastened in their car seats.
Rescue Efforts and Tragic Outcome
After 20 agonising minutes, rescue teams were able to retrieve the UTV from the river, but tragically, the two young children who had been trapped inside the vehicle did not survive the ordeal.
