A mother in Copperopolis, California, is facing serious child endangerment charges following an alarming incident on Sunday evening. The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a 1-year-old child wandering in the middle of the road at the intersection of Little John Road and Copper Cove Drive at approximately 8:35 p.m.

Erratic Behaviour Raises Concerns

Witnesses informed deputies that a woman, later identified as 33-year-old Ashley Marie Agasi, was behaving erratically while walking down the road with the toddler. She was reportedly yelling at dogs, throwing rocks at animals, and attempting to flag down passing vehicles.

Shocking Abandonment

At one point, Agasi allegedly placed the toddler, who was only wearing one shoe, on the hot pavement in order to confront someone in a vehicle. After the confrontation, she left the scene without returning, leaving the child unattended. Fortunately, a bystander intervened to assist the distressed child.

Deplorable Living Conditions Uncovered

When deputies visited Agasi’s residence to check for any other children under her care, they were met with uncooperative behaviour. Subsequent investigations revealed a shocking and hazardous environment within the home. Soiled diapers littered the floor, piles of dog feces were found in the living room, and trash and moldy fruit were scattered throughout the premises. Additionally, multiple windows were shattered, exposing sharp glass fragments, and dirty laundry was strewn across the house.

Legal Consequences and Protective Measures

Child Protective Services intervened, taking custody of the child and assisting in the ongoing investigation. Agasi, who exhibited signs of methamphetamine intoxication, was initially hospitalised before being transferred to police custody. She now faces charges of felony child endangerment, being under the influence of a controlled substance, and resisting law enforcement officers in the execution of their duties.
