Alexander Morris, aged 63, from Southfield, filed a lawsuit last month against Ascension Macomb Oakland Hospital on 12 Mile Road in Warren in U.S. District Court in Detroit regarding an incident that occurred on April 7, 2023, at the hospital. Morris claims that upon arriving at the emergency room with chest pain and breathing difficulties, he informed the staff that he was the lead singer of the iconic Four Tops. However, instead of receiving immediate treatment, Morris alleges that the staff doubted his identity, racially profiled him, delayed his care, and even restrained him in a straitjacket.

In the lawsuit filed by attorney Maurice Davis on Morris’s behalf, it is stated that Morris was denied timely medical attention for his genuine medical emergency, subjected to racial discrimination, and experienced a worsening of his medical condition due to the hospital’s actions. Morris spoke out publicly about the incident shortly after it occurred, expressing his intention to pursue legal action.

The lawsuit, which consists of eight counts, accuses the hospital of racial bias, negligence, gross negligence, false imprisonment, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Morris claims that he informed a nurse and a security guard about his identity as a member of the Four Tops and his security concerns due to stalkers and fans. Despite his disclosures and his documented medical history of cardiac issues, the lawsuit alleges that a doctor, nurse, and security guard did not believe him and opted for a psychiatric evaluation instead of addressing his cardiac distress.

Furthermore, the lawsuit details how Morris was placed in a restraining jacket, deprived of his personal belongings, and denied the medical treatment he urgently needed. It describes an incident where a security guard made a racially derogatory remark to Morris, and despite his requests to leave for alternative treatment, he was kept in the hospital against his will. Eventually, after showing a video of himself performing, Morris managed to convince a nurse of his identity, and he began receiving proper medical care.

Morris was diagnosed with a heart infarction, potential need for a heart transplant, pneumonia, and experienced multiple seizures during his 90-minute stay at the hospital. He declined a $25 gift card offered by the hospital as an apology for the discrimination and dehumanization he endured. Ascension Macomb Oakland Hospital has not yet responded to the lawsuit but previously emphasized their commitment to upholding human dignity and acting with integrity and compassion.

Known as “Lex,” Morris joined the Four Tops in 2019, touring with original member Duke Fakir, Ronnie McNeir, and Lawrence “Roquel” Payton Jr. The group performed alongside The Temptations at the Fox Theatre last October.

In summary, Alexander Morris’s legal action against Ascension Macomb Oakland Hospital sheds light on the importance of equitable and respectful healthcare practices, emphasizing the need to address racial discrimination and ensure all patients receive appropriate and timely medical care..
