Tragedy struck the community of Chester over the weekend as a 17-year-old high school football player, Zaheem Sabree, was fatally shot, Chester police confirmed on Wednesday.

The incident occurred around 6:40 p.m. on Sunday, with authorities responding to reports of gunshots near 24th Street and Crosby Street in Chester. Upon arrival, officers found Sabree lying in the 100 block of East 24th Street, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Despite being rushed to Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Sabree succumbed to his injuries. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown, and no arrests have been made as the investigation continues.

Sabree, a rising senior in the Chester-Upland School District, was an integral part of the high school football team, playing as a defensive back and wide receiver since his sophomore year. His untimely passing has deeply affected his classmates, teachers, teammates, and coaches.

The school district expressed their grief over the loss, highlighting Sabree’s dedication and spirit both on and off the field. Support services are being offered to staff and students as they navigate this tragic event.

His dedication and spirit as a member of our High School football program is irreplaceable and he will be missed by his teammates and coaches, who remember him not just as a player, but as a friend on and off the field.”
