MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A state government minister revealed on Wednesday that a 14-year-old boy accused of stabbing a student at the University of Sydney had previously faced charges that were dismissed by a court. Reports in newspapers suggested that the boy had also been accused of threatening to shoot fellow students.

The boy, who has not been named, is currently receiving a mental health assessment at a Sydney hospital following the incident that took place on Tuesday. New South Wales Police Minister Yasmin Catley emphasized the need for providing support to young individuals who may be influenced by radical ideologies online.

According to authorities, the boy took a bus from the scene of the stabbing to the hospital to seek treatment for a hand injury. He was apprehended by police at the hospital. Meanwhile, the 22-year-old student who sustained a stab wound to the neck has been discharged from the same hospital, as confirmed by Catley.

Suspect’s Attire and Weapon

During the attack, the boy was reportedly dressed in military attire and wielded a kitchen knife. Catley mentioned that the suspect had previously faced charges last year, which were subsequently dismissed by a court. She added that the boy had been participating in a deradicalization program run by the Department of Communities and Justice.

Reports from Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph newspaper, citing undisclosed sources, indicated that the suspect had been charged last year with threatening to shoot his schoolmates and with making self-harm threats. However, a magistrate dismissed the charges in February on the grounds of mental health.

As of now, authorities have not established a clear motive for the stabbing incident nor have they filed any charges against the boy.
