Several stores in North Carolina have recently been fined for price scanning errors, following random inspections conducted by the NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services. These inspections aimed to ensure accuracy between advertised prices and the prices scanned at checkout.

One of the stores that received a fine is the Family Dollar located at 4005 Sunset Road in Mecklenburg County. This particular store paid over $12,000 in penalties and still owes an additional $5,000. The initial inspection in October of 2023 revealed a 7% error rate based on seven overcharges in a 100-item lot. Subsequent inspections in November 2023, and in January, March, and May of this year, showed error rates ranging from 19.33% to 6.67% based on overcharges in a 300-item lot.

In Union County, the Family Dollar at 7907 Idlewild Road in Indian Trail also faced penalties for price scanning errors. The store paid over $23,000 in fines for eight failed inspections. The initial inspection in March 2023 identified an 18% error rate based on nine overcharges in a 50-item lot. Follow-up inspections from last year and from February and April of this year found error rates ranging from 8% to 3% based on overcharges in 300-item lots. In June, the store had a 6.33% error rate based on 19 overcharges in a 300-item lot and was assessed a $5,000 penalty.

Apart from these stores, other establishments in North Carolina that were fined for price scanning errors include:
