DECATUR COUNTY, Ga. (WALB/Gray News) – A tragic farming accident at Rentz Farm Supply in Decatur County, Georgia, has claimed the life of one worker according to officials.
Details of the Accident
Chief Wendell Cofer, of the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, stated that the incident occurred on Tuesday morning around 10 a.m. The worker was inside a grain silo assisting with repairs to the roof, which had been damaged by a recent tornado. Unfortunately, a large metal piece fell inside the silo, resulting in the worker’s untimely death.
Investigator Steve Clark mentioned that the worker was a valued employee who was simply helping out when the accident occurred. The company from Cairo was on-site to replace the grain bin’s roof, with several workers assisting outside the bin while two were inside.
Sequence of Events
As the workers were using a beam to support the roof, it unexpectedly collapsed, striking the worker in the head and shoulder. Clark expressed relief that the other workers were unharmed, acknowledging the tragic loss felt by the worker’s family and colleagues.
The next of kin is currently being notified, and the company will need to inform the Occupational Safety and Health Administration due to the work-related nature of the incident. Despite the tragic outcome, investigators have determined that the incident was purely accidental.
