PHOENIX – Following a distress call at around 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Phoenix Fire Captain Shaun DuBois reported that emergency crews were summoned to a trail on South Mountain due to a juvenile experiencing heat-related complications. The 10-year-old boy was located approximately a mile up the trail.

DuBois explained that the child was subsequently airlifted to the hospital after being safely removed from the trail.

“Preliminary information suggests that the child was accompanied by relatives, possibly visitors from out of town, and they had been hiking on the trail since around 9:30 a.m.,” DuBois stated.

Later in the evening, just before 9 p.m., the Phoenix Police Department confirmed the tragic news that the young boy had passed away at the hospital. The child’s identity has not been disclosed.

Expressing his sympathy towards the tragic incident, witness Mark Sakowicz remarked, “As a parent, I feel terrible about what happened. It’s our responsibility. I believe it depends on the parents’ intentions. They want to give their child a good experience and get them away from screens. As adults, we need to make wise decisions, and today was probably not the best day to be out in this heat.”

Tuesday witnessed scorching temperatures in the Phoenix region. According to the National Weather Service, Sky Harbor recorded a morning low of 92°F, surpassing the previous record of 90°F set in 2010, and nine degrees higher than the average low of 83°F. The mercury soared to 113°F, exceeding the typical high by six degrees.

Phoenix Fire Department is advising caution while hiking in the area.

“Some of the trails on South Mountain can be quite challenging. They are lengthy and may pose difficulties, especially for inexperienced hikers, particularly those unfamiliar with the terrain,” Captain DuBois emphasized.

While certain hiking trails in the Phoenix vicinity are closed when temperatures exceed 105°F, South Mountain does not fall under this restriction.
