The Toronto Police Service has announced that they will be enforcing a court order issued yesterday, requiring the demonstrators at a pro-Palestinian protest encampment at the University of Toronto to dismantle the site by 6 p.m. today.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Markus Koehnen, in granting the court order, highlighted that while there have been no reports of violence or antisemitism from the encampment participants, the protest has hindered the university’s ability to manage the area known as King’s College Circle effectively.

Justice Koehnen emphasized the importance of property owners’ rights to control what occurs on their property. He expressed concerns that if protesters are allowed to claim this power, it could lead to chaos and potentially pave the way for stronger groups to take over the space in the future.

The court order gives the Toronto Police the authority to arrest and remove individuals who fail to comply with the dismantling of the encampment.

According to a statement released by the police, the deadline of 6 p.m. applies specifically to the protesters, and they have the discretion to take necessary action as outlined in the court order.

While some protesters were seen removing signs from the fences surrounding the encampment, it remains unclear whether the demonstrators intend to abide by the court order.

The protesters initially set up camp on May 2 and have stated that they will continue their protest until the university meets their demands, which include transparency and divestment from companies profiting from Israel’s actions in Gaza.

The court ruling highlighted that the University of Toronto has established procedures to address divestment requests and has offered the protesters an expedited process for consideration.
