Roy Robinson, a 67-year-old man, has been sentenced to 44 years in prison for kidnapping and raping a woman at gunpoint in Indianapolis. The sentencing comes almost a year after the attack and police chase that led to his arrest.
Conviction and Charges
Robinson was convicted following a trial in March where he was found guilty of ten charges, including three counts of rape, two counts of kidnapping, two counts of criminal confinement, two counts of resisting law enforcement, and one count of operating as a habitual traffic violator.
The Incident
The incident took place on March 13, 2023, when the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to a report of rape near East 16th Street and Dequincy Streets. The victim reported that a man, later identified as Robinson, approached her at a bus stop, brandished a handgun, and forced her into his car.
Robinson then drove the victim to Brookside Park where he sexually assaulted her. However, the woman managed to escape and sought help at a nearby liquor store, where she informed the police about the incident.

Police Chase and Arrest
Upon receiving the report, police spotted Robinson leaving the scene and attempted to apprehend him. Robinson refused to comply and attempted to flee in his vehicle. A high-speed chase ensued, during which Robinson crashed into a railroad crossing sign and a van near 16th Street and Sherman Drive. Fortunately, the occupants of the van sustained only minor injuries.
Following the crash, detectives obtained a search warrant for Robinson’s car, where they discovered a fake plastic gun under the passenger seat. Additionally, a loaded 9mm magazine, a star-shaped security officer badge, and a backpack containing sex toys were also found in the vehicle.
