MASONVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — A devastating plane crash in a rural area of Masonville, New York, has claimed the lives of five members of a family from Milton, Georgia. The family, who were in town for a baseball tournament in Cooperstown, tragically lost their lives when their small plane, a single-engine Piper PA-46, crashed shortly after takeoff from a regional airport in Oneonta.

The victims have been identified as Roger Beggs, 76; Laura Van Epps, 42; Ryan Van Epps, 42; James Van Epps, 12; and Harrison Van Epps, 10. Ryan Van Epps, the father of James and Harrison, was a former insurance analyst who managed Top Rail Fence, a fence design and installation company in north Georgia. Prior to this, he worked at Van Epps Insurance Advisory and Administrative Services in Roswell, a firm owned by his father.

The family was returning to Georgia after cheering on James’ baseball team at the tournament in Cooperstown. The tragic incident has left friends, family, and the community in shock and mourning the loss of these five lives.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences on social media, offering prayers and support to the victims’ families during this difficult time. The FAA and NTSB are currently investigating the crash to determine the cause of the tragedy.

Jim Van Epps, the father of Ryan Van Epps and grandfather of James and Harrison, spoke of the immense loss his family has experienced. He shared fond memories of his grandsons’ accomplishments in school and sports, highlighting Harrison’s promising future as a lacrosse player.

Online records indicate that Beggs held a pilot’s license, and Laura Van Epps’ father had volunteered to fly the family to New York for the tournament. The plane was en route to Cobb County International Airport in Atlanta with a planned stop in West Virginia before the crash occurred.
