The events unfolded just before 9 a.m. when a trooper from the NCHSP noticed two individuals attempting to change a flat tire on a silver Hyundai Elantra on I-40. Upon approaching the vehicle, the trooper was provided with false identities by the occupants. Further investigation revealed that the passenger may have been wanted for criminal activities.
As the trooper attempted to verify their identities and warrants, the two individuals made the fateful decision to flee the scene in the Elantra. The trooper immediately initiated a pursuit, chasing the vehicle east on I-40. The driver of the Elantra eventually took exit 150 towards NC-115, where a tragic collision occurred with a FedEx truck.
Driver Arrested, Passenger Fatally Injured
The driver of the Elantra, identified as Ridge Raeshaun Gray, aged 27, was apprehended at the scene and subsequently treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital. Tragically, the passenger, identified as Keonte Shakir Forney, aged 28, lost their life in the collision.
