Patricia McKay, a 68-year-old tourist from New Zealand, was identified as the victim of a fatal incident at Newport Beach’s Fashion Island. The tragedy occurred during a botched robbery attempt on Tuesday, according to the Orange County Coroner’s Office.

Incident Overview

Around 3:30 p.m., the event happened next to the Barnes & Noble bookshop in the well-known mall. Two suspects approached McKay and her husband and tried to rob them. One of the suspects pulled McKay out onto the street during the scuffle. In an attempt to flee, the suspects struck McKay fatally with a white Toyota Camry. The Newport Beach Police Department made it clear that the early claims of people being injured by gunshots were untrue.

Suspects Arrested

The suspects were identified by the Newport Beach Police Department as Leroyernest Joseph McCrary, 26, of Compton; Jaden Cunningham, 18, of Lancaster; and Malachi Eddward Darnell, 18, of Los Angeles. The three of them were taken into custody on charges of conspiracy, murder, and armed robbery.

There was a brief chase after the event. Two suspects were taken into custody in South Gate, while one was captured in Cypress. In South Gate, police officers were seen on camera protecting the area around a house while brandishing their weapons.

Police Statements

At a news conference, Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman Officer Steve Oberon gave specifics. He explained how the car hit McKay and one of the suspects ran away on foot. After getting back into the car, the evading suspect opened fire, and the suspects took off running. The event did not damage McKay’s spouse.

Shopping Mall Reaction

Witnesses reported seeing the mall in a chaotic state. An employee at the business related how a woman shouted about a shooter as she entered with her daughter. For almost sixty minutes, the business was under lockdown, and terrified patrons sought shelter indoors.

Community Response

Will O’Neill, the mayor of Newport Beach, spoke to the media, denouncing the suspects and expressing sorrow for the terrible death. He highlighted Newport Beach’s standing as a secure neighbourhood and gave law police credit for their prompt response. O’Neill expressed confidence in the safety of consumers at the mall and reassured the public about its security.
