A second body of a man was discovered on Tuesday in the wreckage of a mall that was set ablaze during the recent anti-tax demonstrations in Nairobi.
Almost a week after the fire destroyed the Sunbeam Shopping Complex along Mfangano Street, officials at the complex informed the police that they had found a burnt human body while clearing the debris on July 2.
The badly burnt and decaying body was confirmed by the police at the scene before being moved to the City mortuary for DNA analysis and preservation.
First Body Found
Prior to this discovery, the body of a 56-year-old man named Mathew Njoroge was found in the debris of the mall on June 27, two days after the complex was razed down.
It is believed that the six-storey building was set on fire by looters who had invaded the premises, with the situation escalating due to teargas canisters thrown by the police to disperse the looters during the chaotic incident on June 25.
Protests and Property Damage
The Sunbeam Shopping Complex was just one of many properties targeted and looted by mobs during the protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
President William Ruto’s decision to return the bill to the House did little to quell the unrest, as subsequent protests were marred by criminal elements exacerbating the situation by attacking and robbing businesses.
At least 40 casualties have been reported in the ongoing turmoil, with protesters even breaching the Parliament Building and occupying the House during the demonstrations.
Security Investigations
Security agencies are currently investigating the incidents, which also saw the breach and vandalism of other key government buildings such as City Hall and the Supreme Court.
Many business owners in the city suffered significant losses as their properties were looted or damaged in the chaos, with the repercussions of the unrest still being felt across Nairobi.
