The incident occurred on August 5, 2020, when Bui, Seymour, and Siebert set fire to a house they believed belonged to individuals who had robbed Bui of his phone, money, and shoes. Tragically, the victims of the fire were not the ones responsible for the robbery. Djibril Diol, his wife Adja Diol, their daughters Khadija and Hawa, and Djibril’s sister Hassan Diol all lost their lives in the blaze.
The three teenagers were identified as suspects after police obtained a search warrant from Google, which revealed IP addresses of individuals who had searched for the home’s address following the fire. Despite facing charges of first-degree murder, arson, and attempted murder, Bui accepted a plea deal and pleaded guilty to lesser charges.
During his sentencing hearing, Seymour expressed deep remorse for his actions, stating that he feels extreme guilt for the harm he caused. Siebert, who had a minor role in planning the fire, also apologized to the family for his involvement.
Amadou Beye, the husband of Hassan Diol and father of baby Hawa, expressed the family’s desire to move forward and live with the tragedy for the rest of their lives.
