A male suspect has been formally charged in relation to a tragic car accident that occurred on Tuesday (2nd July) in Iredell County. The victim of the crash has been identified as Keonte Shakir Forney, aged 28. The suspect, Ridge Rashaun Gray, aged 27, is facing multiple felony charges including death by vehicle and fleeing to elude arrest. Additionally, Gray has been charged with reckless driving, driving while license revoked, failure to heed life and siren, failure to stop for a red light, failure to reduce speed, and failure to maintain lane control.
Reports from the Iredell Free News state that a North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper stopped to assist two individuals who were in the process of changing a flat tire on a Hyundai Elantra on Interstate 40 at approximately 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The individuals reportedly provided false identification to the trooper, leading to suspicions that the passenger may have been wanted for other offences.
While the trooper was in the process of conducting a warrant check, Gray allegedly accelerated away from the scene, heading eastbound on Interstate 40. The trooper pursued the Elantra along the interstate until the vehicle took Exit 150 towards N.C. Highway 15 in Statesville. Tragically, at the foot of the exit ramp, the Elantra collided with the rear of a FedEx truck.
Following the collision, Keonte Shakir Forney, who was a passenger in the Hyundai, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Gray was apprehended and later received medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at a nearby hospital. He was subsequently taken into custody on Tuesday evening. As of the most recent update, Gray’s incarceration status in Iredell County remains unconfirmed.
