SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Swathes of California sweltered on Tuesday as a heatwave gripped the state, with temperatures soaring and nearly 90 million people under heat alerts across the United States.

The torrid conditions were attributed to a ridge of high pressure off the West Coast and a separate ridge that generated heat warnings and advisories in several states from Kansas and Missouri to the Gulf Coast, as per the National Weather Service.

California’s capital, Sacramento, was under an excessive heat warning set to last until Sunday night, with temperatures forecasted to reach between 105 degrees and 115 degrees (40.5 and 46.1 Celsius).

John Mendoza, 35, described the heat as a “firehose of heat” as he strolled around the Capitol with an iced coffee in hand. By 9 a.m., he had already taken a dip in a pool and planned to return later in the day.

About 70 miles (113 kilometers) north of Sacramento, firefighters battled a wildfire in Butte County, prompting the evacuation of around 13,000 people in and around Oroville. The Thompson Fire, as it was named, broke out before noon, rapidly growing to over 3 square miles (7.7 square kilometers) by evening with zero containment.

As temperatures spiked in Sacramento, Katherine Powers sought refuge in the shade of Cathedral Square. Powers, who is homeless, sipped sparkling water while resting her bare feet on the shaded sidewalk.

Dr. Arthur Jey, an emergency services physician with Sutter Health in Sacramento, emphasized the importance of getting out of the heat, wearing appropriate clothing, staying hydrated, and being vigilant for signs of heat stroke.

The heatwave is expected to persist in California, with high temperatures affecting interior areas such as the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys and the southern deserts. San Francisco, known for its cool summers, experienced warmer temperatures, with downtown reaching the upper 80s (31 C) and Ocean Beach in the mid-60s (18.3 C).

California has faced a series of wildfires, with the largest current blaze, the Basin Fire, 17% contained after scorching more than 21 square miles (54 square kilometers) of the Sierra National Forest in eastern Fresno County since it started on June 26.

Stay safe and cool during this heatwave!
