The Austin Police Department (APD) has made an arrest following a tragic incident in South Austin that resulted in the death of a man. The incident took place in the 6700 block of Windrift Way, near West William Cannon Drive and Menchaca Road, on July 1.

Authorities were alerted to the scene around 5:40 p.m. on Monday after receiving reports of a shooting or stabbing at an apartment complex. The 911 caller indicated that a victim had suffered “penetrating trauma,” prompting a swift response from APD, the Austin Fire Department, and Austin-Travis County EMS.

Despite the efforts of first responders to administer life-saving measures and CPR, the victim, identified as 51-year-old James Lerond, tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead just after 6 p.m.

During the investigation at the scene, officers discovered 22-year-old Hayden Lerond, the son of the victim, with minor injuries and blood on his knees. He was promptly taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Subsequent inquiries revealed that Hayden Lerond had allegedly stabbed his father, leading to the fatal outcome. He was subsequently taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder, with further details about the motive behind the incident yet to be disclosed by the authorities.

As the investigation continues, this incident marks the 30th homicide in Austin for the year 2024.
