In a devastating incident in the Zemabawk area of northern Aizawl city, a family of three tragically lost their lives due to a massive landslide caused by heavy rainfall. The victims have been identified as Isak Chhangte (32), his wife Lalrinthari (25), and their young daughter Abigail Lalchhanhimi (4).

Tragic Loss in Zemabawk

On Tuesday morning, at approximately 5:30 am, the Chhangte family’s home was engulfed by a deluge of mud and debris, burying them alive. Despite the efforts of local volunteers, the bodies of the three victims were only recovered around 10:30 am. Fortunately, Isak Chhangte’s parents, who were also in the house at the time, managed to escape unharmed.

Adjacent to Zemabawk, in the Zuangtui locality, three buildings housing four families were completely obliterated by landslides. While one young girl sustained minor injuries during the evacuation process, there were no additional casualties reported in this particular incident. The timely evacuation of three families had likely prevented further loss of life.

Evacuation Efforts and Ongoing Challenges

Authorities have taken proactive measures by relocating at least 19 families to safer areas in the Salem neighbourhood of southern Aizawl. The region had previously witnessed tragedy during Cyclone Remal in late May, where three family members perished when their residence succumbed to mudslides.

Meanwhile, in Mamit town near the Tripura border, residents of three buildings vacated their homes due to ground subsidence caused by the incessant rainfall.

Statewide Impact and Disruption

The heavy downpour has wreaked havoc across the state, leading to numerous roads, including major highways, being blocked by substantial landslides. The clearance of debris obstructing these vital routes poses a significant challenge for contractors and personnel from the state’s public works department. As of Tuesday evening, several villages and towns remain isolated due to the severed transportation links.

In addition to the transportation woes, the continuous rainfall has disrupted power supply in various parts of the state, including Aizawl. Since the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, which damaged the water pump set near the Tlawng river, residents of Aizawl have been grappling with severe water shortages. Unfortunately, repair efforts on the pump set have been impeded by the ongoing inclement weather.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by these tragic events, and we hope for swift recovery and support for those impacted by the recent natural disasters.
