Isabella Tucci faces charges of child neglect without great bodily harm following the incident that unraveled in Palm Coast on Monday, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 9 a.m., a vacationer in the vicinity found the toddler at an entrance to a parking lot on Club House Drive and promptly notified the sheriff’s office for assistance. Deputies subsequently conducted a thorough search of the neighbourhood for any vehicles equipped with child car seats or individuals who may have been looking for the missing child.

Subsequently, deputies stumbled upon a second-floor condominium unit with its front door left ajar. The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the occupant of the condo was asleep at the time of the discovery.

The individual, identified as Tucci, claimed to be the mother of the young child found wandering in the neighbourhood, according to deputies. She recounted that she had last seen her son at 2 a.m. when she put him to bed, had not checked on him since, and had been asleep until deputies arrived at her residence at 10:30 a.m.

“When questioned about the last time the child had been fed, she gestured towards an open box of cereal on the kitchen floor and mentioned that he may have consumed it, but she was uncertain as she was asleep,” deputies disclosed. “Tucci also mentioned that her child had the ability to unlock and open doors, which had been an ongoing issue.”

Deputies highlighted that Tucci’s residence lacked child-proof locks and noted the presence of potential hazards like a stairway leading to the second floor, ‘an elevated fall hazard,’ and a nearby canal, ‘a water hazard.’ Additionally, open containers of alcohol, as well as litter and food scattered on the floors, were found.

“Moreover, the entrance to the condos – where the child was discovered – is situated along Club House Drive, a busy thoroughfare connecting Palm Harbor Parkway and Palm Coast Parkway,” the sheriff’s office remarked.

Tucci informed deputies that she had recently tested positive for THC and alcohol a few days prior, and an on-site drug screening conducted on that day revealed that the 22-year-old had tested positive for methadone, a medication utilised for pain relief and addiction treatment, in accordance with the sheriff’s office.

The Department of Children and Families has assumed custody of the 2-year-old boy amidst the ongoing investigation, and efforts are underway to formulate a parenting plan for his well-being.

Tucci has since been released from the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility after posting a bond of £2,500, as indicated by online jail records.

“Clearly, this mother won’t be winning any parenting awards unless she can make a complete turnaround and prioritise her child’s well-being over illicit substances,” remarked Sheriff Rick Staly in a statement. “This was an extremely distressing situation that could have had far graver consequences. Fortunately, a concerned visitor spotted something amiss and decided to report it, potentially saving a life. Parents, ensure that your doors are securely locked and your homes are child-proofed. Otherwise, we and DCF will intervene. Hopefully, this young mother will receive the necessary assistance to transform her life for the better.”
