An incident in Ormond Beach, Florida, has sparked outrage after a grandmother was arrested for leaving her two-year-old grandchild alone in a hot car while she shopped at Publix. The woman, identified as Elena Grady, 63, was taken into custody by deputies from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday.

The incident unfolded at the Publix on Roscommon Drive in Ormond Beach, where concerned customers alerted the store manager about a child left unattended in a Toyota sedan in the parking lot. The child was reportedly alone in the back seat of the car, which was parked in the sun with only partially lowered windows.

The store manager, upon seeing the child in a lethargic state, intervened by removing the toddler from the car. The child appeared clammy and limp, prompting the manager to bring them into the store for safety.

Upon questioning, Elena Grady approached the scene and claimed the child as her own. She allegedly admitted to leaving the child in the car because they were asleep and she did not want to wake them. However, surveillance footage revealed that Grady had been inside the store with the child in the car for over 15 minutes.

Following her arrest, Grady was booked into the Volusia County jail but has since been released on $3,000 bond. The child was reunited with their parents, who confirmed that they were in good health despite the ordeal.
