On Wednesday, a Florida man was taken into custody after allegedly shooting down a Walmart delivery drone, causing significant damage and rendering it inoperable. The incident, which took place at 1450 Johns Lake Road in Clermont, was reported by Walmart representatives to deputies in Lake County.

Deputies were alerted to the incident after receiving a call from Walmart, where drone delivery representatives reported that a two-man crew conducting mock deliveries had their drone shot down in a nearby community. The crew had been in front of a home in a cul-de-sac when they heard what sounded like a gunshot as the drone began to descend.

One of the representatives witnessed a 60-year-old white man, later identified as Dennis Winn, aiming a gun towards the sky and the descending drone from the side of the home. The crew promptly returned to Walmart, only to discover that the drone’s payload system had sustained $2,500 worth of damage.

Upon visiting the home where the alleged shooting occurred, deputies spoke with Winn, a 72-year-old resident. During questioning, Winn confessed to the incident, revealing that he had fired at the drone because he suspected it was surveilling him. He cited previous encounters with drones flying over his property as the basis for his suspicion and subsequent actions.

Winn was subsequently arrested and charged with shooting at an aircraft, criminal mischief causing damage exceeding $1,000, and discharging a firearm on public or residential property. He is currently in police custody.

The Walmart drone that was targeted was part of a promotional campaign aimed at showcasing the company’s delivery capabilities and attracting potential customers. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks and liabilities associated with drone operations, particularly when individuals take matters into their own hands.
