In a shocking turn of events, Pennsylvania State Police have announced that a man is facing charges in connection to human remains that were discovered in Shenango Lake, Mercer County, at the end of June. The investigation into this gruesome discovery has sent shockwaves through the community.

According to a news release by Pennsylvania State Police, dismembered human remains were first found partially submerged in the waters of Shenango Lake on June 25. Over the following week, more dismembered remains were discovered in Shenango Lake as well as in various remote locations. The coroner confirmed that all the remains belonged to the same individual.

The victim has been identified as 14-year-old Paul Likens Jr., who was reported missing from Sharon towards the end of June. A forensic pathologist determined that the victim had been dismembered using a cutting instrument. The Mercer County Coroner’s Office ruled the cause of death as sharp force trauma to the head, with the manner of death being classified as homicide.

The last known contact with the victim was on June 22, as per Pennsylvania State Police. Through an investigation involving phone records, social media records, and surveillance footage, it was discovered that the victim had walked to Budd Street Public Park and Canoe Launch on June 23 around 3 a.m., seemingly to meet someone.

Video evidence from the launch area led police to identify a suspect vehicle, which was traced back to Riverwalk Apartments. Surveillance footage from the apartment complex showed a man, later identified as DaShawn Watkins, leaving and returning to his apartment in a manner consistent with the movements of the suspect vehicle. Watkins was seen struggling to carry a duffle bag upon his return, and was observed leaving his apartment multiple times on June 24 carrying various bags and garbage bags.

Preliminary tests conducted in Watkins’ apartment revealed the presence of blood, including under the bathroom floor lining, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

DaShawn Watkins now faces several charges, including first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse. He is currently being held without bail at the Mercer County Jail as the investigation continues.
