Arrest Made in Fatal Incident at Powell Street Station

BART authorities have apprehended a suspect in connection with the tragic death of a 74-year-old woman at Powell Street Station on Monday evening. The victim, identified as Corazon Dandan, was allegedly pushed by the suspect as a train bound for Millbrae approached, causing her to collide with the train and fall onto the platform. She was rushed to the hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries.

Dandan, a telephone operator at the Marriott, had been using the same commute route for over four decades. Her family is said to be devastated by the loss. BART Police Chief Kevin Franklin revealed that the suspect, a 49-year-old transient man, approached the victim as the train was pulling into the station and forcibly pushed her towards it, leading to the fatal collision.

Chief Franklin commended his officers for their swift response, arriving at the scene within four minutes and apprehending the suspect within eight minutes of the incident. The suspect was promptly taken into custody on the platform of Powell Street Station and has since been booked into San Francisco County Jail on charges of murder and elder abuse.

This tragic event marks the first homicide on the BART system this year. In the aftermath of the incident, multiple witnesses stayed behind to assist, while investigators are diligently working to ascertain the motive behind the senseless killing. While the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case, no charges have been filed at this stage.
