As we look back 100 years ago to 1924, Chester was preparing for a “Safe and Sane Fourth of July” celebration. The city had planned a civic program to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all residents. Patriotic hymns were played on the chimes of Saint Paul’s Protestant Episcopal Church to kick off the day’s events. With good weather on the horizon, the celebration promised to be one of the most successful observances in recent years.

75 Years Ago, 1949:

In 1949, police were called to investigate a petition protesting the widening of Edgmont Avenue and Ninth Street. It was discovered that several signatures, including those of Dr. John P. Nolan, Dr. William H. Goodman, and M.J. Freed, had been forged. Dr. Nolan, whose address was falsely listed, spoke out against the forgeries, highlighting the need for a thorough investigation into the matter.

50 Years Ago, 1974:

In 1974, the Chester Republican organization was cleared of charges of voting fraud in the primary election. State Attorney General Israel Packel announced that only minimal violations of election laws were found during a preliminary investigation by the Pennsylvania Crime Commission. This ruling came as a blow to U.S. Rep. Lawrence G. Williams, who had alleged extensive voting fraud in Chester during the primary.

25 Years Ago, 1999:

Twenty-five years ago, Lansdowne police released a sketch of a man wanted in connection with multiple burglaries at an apartment complex. The suspect, described as a sharp dresser, had targeted apartments in the Wildman Arms complex on multiple occasions. Residents were urged to be vigilant and report any sightings of the suspect, who was known to ride a bicycle.

10 Years Ago, 2014:

In 2014, Aston commissioners authorised the purchase of the Lister property for a nominal amount of $110.50. The property had been abandoned by its former owner and was moved into the Delaware County Repository. Despite no bids being received during the judicial upset sale, the commissioners saw the potential in acquiring the property for filing fees and certifications.

It is fascinating to reflect on Chester’s historical events over the years, showcasing the city’s resilience and evolution through various challenges and triumphs.
