A police officer from New Jersey is facing criminal charges after allegedly being involved in a hit-and-run incident that left a teenage cyclist in critical condition. Christopher Bucceroni, a 28-year-old officer from West Deptford, has been charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in serious bodily injury, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.

The incident took place on June 20 at the intersection of Blackwood-Clementon and Erial roads in Gloucester Township, located approximately 15 miles southeast of Philadelphia. Gloucester Township Police responded to a crash involving a vehicle and a bicycle in the early hours of the morning, where they found an 18-year-old male cyclist from Gloucester suffering from serious injuries. The victim was rushed to Cooper University Hospital and remains in critical condition.

Bucceroni, who was allegedly driving a 2020 Toyota Rav 4 at the time of the incident, fled the scene following the crash but turned himself in to authorities the next day. The nine-year veteran officer was off duty and driving his personal vehicle when the hit-and-run occurred.

Following the incident, Bucceroni was suspended without pay by the Gloucester Township Police Department. Police Chief David Harkins stated that the department intends to terminate Bucceroni’s employment, emphasizing that such conduct is not tolerated within the department.

“The men and women of the Gloucester Township Police Department are dedicated public servants who uphold integrity and honour in their service to the community. We are disappointed by this incident and urge the public not to judge our department based on the actions of one individual,” Harkins said in a statement.
