Accident – Death – Obituary News :

It was a rare sight to see him in front of a camera, but his impact on television news and broadcasting in Hamilton will never be forgotten.

Bill Custers, a beloved figure at Cable 14, passed away at the age of 63, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to local politics, culture, and charitable causes.

After an illustrious 41-year career, Custers retired last year, leaving a void that will be hard to fill. Colleagues remember him as a man of unwavering passion, clear vision, and exceptional teamwork.

A Passionate Career in Broadcasting

Born in St. Catharines, Custers had television in his blood from a young age. He graduated from Niagara College’s broadcasting program in 1983 and began his journey at Cable 14, where he spent nine years before taking on leadership roles in programming at other networks.

Greg Oliver, a former colleague, fondly recalls Custers’ promotional prowess. “He was instrumental in promoting wrestling events for WWF and driving pay-per-view sales. He understood the media landscape like no other.”

After a stint at Viewers Choice Canada, Custers returned to Cable 14 in 2012 to manage the station’s broadcast operations. His commitment to the community was evident when he played a pivotal role in guiding CHCH News through the transition to high-definition broadcasting.

A Legacy of Service

Mayor Andrea Horwath of Hamilton commended Custers for his exceptional service to the city, especially during the pandemic. In recognition of his contributions, Custers was awarded the Order of Hamilton last year.

“Bill’s dedication to the city was unmatched. He worked tirelessly to keep the community informed and supported various charities with his time and resources,” Mayor Horwath remarked.

Custers leaves behind his wife, Sue, his daughter Heather, and his beloved grandchildren. His impact on the world of broadcasting and his community will be felt for years to come.

Rest in peace, Bill Custers.
