The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) responded to a tragic incident on Oct. 30 in the 1200 block of Labelle Street, where they found 36-year-old Bernard Troutman Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound. Unfortunately, Troutman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the investigation, JSO identified 30-year-old Dwayne Martin as a person of interest in the case. Martin was later charged with second-degree murder, with a warrant being issued on June 29.

The shooting death of Troutman took place at the Valencia Way Apartment complex in the Hillcrest neighbourhood. Just a week prior, a teenager was tragically killed in the same complex. At the time, police stated that it was unclear if the two shootings were connected.

According to a release from the sheriff’s office, detectives worked tirelessly over the following months to gather and assess all available evidence, as well as conduct numerous interviews. Their efforts paid off as Martin was located and arrested in connection to the shooting death of Bernard Troutman Jr.
