A recently trained junior firefighter in Massachusetts has been hailed a hero after his quick thinking and life-saving skills helped rescue a woman in distress. The 15-year-old, Ben Courville, sprang into action when he noticed a woman choking on her food at a restaurant near Boston.
Christine Courville, Ben’s mother, recounted the harrowing incident, stating, “He was quick to leap to action, got her, swung her around, got behind her, and started doing the Heimlich.”
The mother-son duo was having dinner together when Ben spotted the woman at the adjacent table struggling to breathe. “I saw some stuff that wasn’t really normal and I asked if she was choking, and she nodded her head. So, that’s when I got up and I performed the Heimlich maneuver,” Ben shared.
Ben Courville credited his training for equipping him with the necessary skills to handle such emergencies. “We have a probationary period, which is a six-month period after we join, so during those six months, you have to get CPR and first responder certified,” he explained.
The woman’s family expressed their gratitude by covering the Courvilles’ meal expenses. “She said, ‘You saved my daughter’s life,’ and the daughter came over and hugged him,” Christine Courville revealed.
Reflecting on the incident, Ben Courville hopes his actions will inspire others to learn basic life-saving techniques like the Heimlich maneuver and CPR. “I just think … people should learn that stuff in case, even if it’s just a family member or something at the dinner table, it’s definitely helpful to know,” he said.
According to the National Safety Council, choking ranks as the fourth leading cause of death, with two-thirds of fatalities occurring among individuals over 75 years old.
