A man has been found guilty of murdering his wife after a thorough investigation by the Met’s homicide detectives uncovered evidence of the crime. Aminan Rahman, aged 46, from Bridgewater, Somerset, was convicted of killing his 24-year-old wife, Suma Begum, following a month-long trial at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, 3 July.

The court heard that Rahman, who was in a relationship with Suma, who lived in the United Arab Emirates, had saved videos showing him threatening to kill his wife and putting his hands around her throat. The chilling footage captured Rahman admitting to killing Suma and then disposing of her body in a suitcase thrown into a nearby river.

Suma’s friends and family raised the alarm when they were unable to contact her, prompting a police investigation. Rahman was arrested on 2 May 2023 and subsequently charged with murder on 4 May 2023. Tragically, Suma’s body was discovered in the suitcase on a river bank in Thamesmead on 10 May 2023.

Allen continued, “We also successfully retrieved and examined the full video call in which Rahman confessed to killing Suma in a fit of jealousy. This tragic case has been a challenging journey for Suma’s loved ones, who had to endure the distressing details of how her body was concealed by her husband.”

Rahman was also found guilty of assaulting Suma on a previous occasion, further highlighting the pattern of abuse in their relationship. Suma had documented an incident in which Rahman had nearly strangled her, underscoring the severity of the domestic violence she endured.

Sentencing and Commitment to Combat Violence Against Women

Rahman is scheduled to be sentenced at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, 31 July, where justice will be served for Suma and her grieving family. The Metropolitan Police, as part of their ‘A New Met for London’ initiative, is prioritising efforts to protect the public from harm and safeguard vulnerable individuals.

The Met’s revised Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) action plan aims to combat sex offenders, address violence against women, enhance safety for women and girls, and rebuild trust within the community. By prioritising the reduction and prevention of violence against women, the Met is committed to creating a safer and more secure environment for all individuals.
